and my first area is....

LETTER 6 ~

ROMA!

the Temple being built in the outskirts of the city
...specifically Rome 1 !!

Rome is divided into many areas, and mine is the one that's supposedly the 'heart of Rome!'
The Vatican is in our area so that is where we're going for P-Day today.
We live in a neighborhood called Montespaccato, which I think means 'Split Mountain.'

Okay wow a lot has happened since I've last been able to write!
We left the MTC and three flights and 24 hours later we were in Roma!
We met the mission president and assistants and went to 'the Villa,'
the BEAUTIFUL mission home!

That night we found out where our first assignments were!  And mine is Rome!

So I will be here for at least 12 weeks.

The next morning (Thursday) we said our goodbyes and headed out to our areas!
I am in love with italy already and taking lots of pics!

My trainer is Sorella Clyde! She is SO nice! She returns home early March and been all over Italy.

We were a 'blow in,' which means neither of us had been in the area before that transfer!

In addition, there were only one set of sorelle before, now there are 2, so we are starting from scratch! We are working hard to try to get some investigators. The other sorelle are Sorella Marsh and Sorella Argyle, who was actually in my Writing 150 H class at BYU! Small world!

About my area... It's pretty hilly, there are apartment buildings called 'palazzi' everywhere.

Also it is just FULL of immigrants from all over the world! Ghana, Nigeria, Egypt, Romania, Venezuela, Peru, the Philippines, Bangladesh just to name a few. Sometimes we've tried to talk to someone but they don't speak English, Italian, or Spanish so it's impossible! Most people speak English or Italian though, in addition to their native language.

We teach a free English class twice a week, which is great! All kinds of people come there. We just work on conversational phrases and vocabulary, and we give a little 'spiritual thought' at the end. My first night was English class and afterwards a man came up to us and wanted to know more about the Church! He's originally from Afghanistan and he is GOLDEN, really searching for the truth! But we decided to have the anziani (guy missionaries) start teaching him since he's a single guy. We got him a Persian Book of Mormon to read though!
The only other simpatizzanti (investigators) we have right now are a mom and young daughter from Ecuador. We found their teaching record in the Area Book. They've been here for several years, they speak Italian but it's mixed with Spanish (Spataliano as I call it). It's great, I totally understand them and probably respond in Spataliano as well.

The people here are not super open to hearing about the gospel, but at least they are most often polite about it! And a fair amount of them have interest in the free English class. We are going to visit some members this week and ask them for referrals, hopefully that will be more successful!

Oh speaking of visiting members, I survived my first pranzo (lunch)! A sister in our ward has the missionaries over for pranzo once a month. So much good food...too much! The first dish was a heaping pile of gnocchi with tomato sauce and mozzarella. Then we had a plate of  pepperoni (peppers) in olive oil, white bean and celery salad, and prosciutto and this sliced meat with cheese in it and a thick slice of Naples bread. Then a plate of hardboiled eggs, chicken in tomato sauce, and beets. And for a dessert: a bowl of fruit, a cannolini, and 2 muffins. Wow. Somehow I managed to eat it all, I don't know how!

All in all I'm loving Italy!

My Italian is enough to mostly understand people and mostly say what I need to.

Hope all is great with you and yours!
